Fellowship opportunity for Indonesian participants

BasicNeeds has a partnership with the Nossal Institute for Global Health in Melbourne. The Institute is planning to conduct a six-week training program in Melbourne for participants from Indonesia who are interested in further developing and implementing community mental health programs. People who are interested can apply for funding from AusAID.

The message below from Jia Zhen provides further details:

The Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) Fellowships are a component of AusAID’s regional program that aims to develop leadership and build partnerships and linkages with the Asia-Pacific. They are intended for those who are already leaders or have the potential to assume leadership roles that can influence social and economic policy reform and development outcomes, both in their own countries and in the Asia-Pacific region. ALA Fellowships are for short term study, research and professional attachment programs in Australia delivered by Australian organisations. This is a highly flexible program that offers Australian organisations opportunities to provide short term study, research and professional development activities in Australia for fellows from the Asia-Pacific region. Fellows are leaders or mid-career professionals from the Asia-Pacific region who have the potential to assume leadership roles that can influence social and economic policy reform and development outcomes, both in their own countries and in the region.

Prospective Fellows identified by Australian organisations must be professionals already in leadership positions or have a potential to assume leadership roles that can influence social and economic policy reform and development outcomes, both in their own countries and within the Asia- Pacific region.

Additional information is available on the AusAID website at
http://www.ausaid.gov.au/scholar/alafellow.cfm.

I have told Jia that there may be some interest in this opprotunity from friends of BasicNeeds in Indonesia. The program would take place in August and September 2009. If you want to find out more, please write to her directly at jzhen@unimelb.edu.au

Greetings From The Maldives

I have been working on a school safety project and has been traveling to different islands during the past few months. During these visit I come across children and women who are abused, or are being abused and negelected. Recently I had to talk to a young boy who has been negelcted by the family just becasue he smokes. When I sat down with him the first thing that came to my mind was the counceling session of the TOT programme.
I just want to mention that each and everyday we come across some situation where people need our assistance in one way or other, and the TOT did give me a new platform..
Thank you Basic Needs for the training and I really, really look forward to another such opportunity.

Regards
Fathimath

Thinking ahead to December in Bangladesh

How can we achieve the most from the planned ToT review meeting in Bangladesh in December? I was thinking about this and would welcome suggestions. Normally, we ask participants to provide an update on their work, we identify issues, share ideas and provide additional training.

But I was also considering us working together on a shared initiative in community mental health. For example, we could organise a one-day workshop in the subject, invite government representatives, donors, NGO and other agencies. Then we could ask people to become members of a task force or group that would lead in this area. I think there would be interest, especially as the subject is so often overlooked. But I also know that we would need resources to do this.

The dates I am considering for the ToT Review would be two days during the week beginning 7th December , but Heloise will be in contact with Bangladesh participants about this. I know that the following week has a public holiday.
