Goals?

I'm ULYA, from Indonesia. Still need to learn about GOAL, that we have not discussed yet. Would you please explain it to me? Thanks

Dear Ulya,

GOAL - Anticipated long-term objective towards which the project will contribute or meant to contribute to, in the long run.

It will depend on a number of related interventions, i.e. projects or processes beyond the control of the project itself

COMMON PROBLEM IN SETTING UP GOALS:
Tendency to use broad, very ambitious goals in order to provide a solid justification for the project
BUT...
It is suggested to choose a NARROW, SPECIFIC GOAL in order to increase the probability of success.

IMPORTANT:
The GOAL should be realistically defined, i.e. that the purpose will significantly contribute to achieving the goal

EXAMPLE:
Problem: Frequent Bus Accidents

Purpose: Frequency of bus accidents reduced

Goal: High service level for bus passengers

If we take this example, you can see very clearly that HIgh Service level for bus passengers cannot be achieved fully by just reducing bus accidents, of course it can contribute in a big way.

Ulya, as far as i understood - goal is how we justify our project not to the donor but ourself, it could be the ultimatum of the purpose. eg. our purpose is 'the affected community will overcome the psychological impacts' then our goal should be 'Achieving normalcy in the community' because ultimately after overcoming the grief the community would turn to normal as how they were before. so it could be measureable in one way. But i appreciate for your effort to make us think in this line b'cause we did not write that in the paper until i saw your quiry. Eagerly waiting for the resource persons comment and other participants too.

Goal:
The ultimate result to which your project is contributing-
the impact of the project.
Example
1.Decrease in mental illness
2.Increase literacy

Dear Ulya,

It is good to hear from you.

Sometimes it helps to think of the goal as a future state of affairs. Examples from projects in which I have been involved are:

'Access to safe drinking water for everyone'.

'Affordable and reliable energy services available to all Indigenous communities in Central Australia'

'Improved emotional well-being in the region'.

As others have said, the project then contributes to this goal, even though other factors or other projects may also need to play a part.

I hope this helps.
