From The Maldives

I took a two hour lecture session for the Social workers being trained in Male. There were 17 participants from different islands of the Maldives. Depression, stress and caring for ones own self were some of the topics discussed during this session. And Basic need training has been of utmost use for me on this day. Other wise I wouldn't have been comfortable in talking about these issues. Thanks for the training.

Progress from Tamil Nadu

Karuppusamy on his return conducted an orientation programme on psychosocial care attended by Self Help Group leaders on 28th and 29th of July. 26 women leaders participated at this programme. He was able to apply some of the methods that he learned at the recently concluded ToT programme.

The programme commenced with self introductions, name of the SHG, name of the village, etc. followed by the Women’s Rights song. Everyone actively participated in singing.

He then shared his experience of the recent ToT programme in Sri Lanka explaining how many participants attended and which countries they represented. He also shared what he learned about psychosocial care giving special attention to topics like: common mental disorders, grief and abnormal situations and trauma. He introduced the game "bus and driver" as an energiser.

He used the Problem tree exercise based on the following questions: The reasons for failure of a SHG and reason for success of a SHG. The answers were then written on a chart sheet with the support of READ staff.

Fourth Training of Trainers Programme

The fourth successful training of trainers programme was held in Beruwela, Sri Lanka from 16th to 26th July 2007. Thirteen participants completed the programme from the following countries: India, Indonesia, Maldives, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and USA.

The unique feature of the training of trainers programme is the follow-up programme; which is a central part of our commitment to improving access of people affected by mental illness to appropriate support and services and we look forward to continuing it with the commitment of the group of participants.

Some of the comments offered by the participants on the overall evaluation of the programme:

“Overall I can say that it is good because like most trainings you just don’t train us and leave us. You do the follow ups. That’s the best part!”

“For someone who is from a total different background I have acquired quite an amount of knowledge and interacting with people with different cultures and background brought in more knowledge”

BasicNeeds will conduct its fifth Training of Trainers programme from 15th to 25th November 2007 in Indonesia.
